1968…two kids…an abandoned gas station in Hartstown, Pa., and a love for motorcycles. Back then it was known as Northwest Yamaha. The brand mix also included the British BSA brand, Ohio built Rupp mini-bikes, and Arctic Cat and Yamaha snowmobiles. Dick and Joanne Lepley, the founders, had a small amount of money borrowed from Joanne’s family, coupled to a dream to be in the motorcycle business, and the energy that only comes with youth. In 1969 the operation moved to the Conneaut Lake road about a mile east of its current location. After a two year struggle, the Lepley’s were able to secure a Honda motorcycle franchise and the business became Street Track ’N Trail, Inc. Demand for motorcycle skyrocketed in the early seventies and Joanne’s folks and her grandmother joined the duo to ease the workload. Their expertise was instrumental in helping the company move toward the future.
Fast forward to 1975. That was the year Honda automobiles became part of the product mix, and the timing could not have been better. In 1973 the acronym OPEC was added to the American lexicon. Fuel supplies dwindled to an unheard of low, gasoline prices spiraled ever higher, and the lines at gas stations grew longer. But, Street Track ’N Trail had secret weapons. One was the Honda Civic and the other the Honda Accord. Both were technical wonders, just as they are today. 1990 saw a major addition to the dealership when Dick and Joanne purchased the local Harley-Davidson® dealership adding Milwaukee Iron to the growing list of world class motorcycles on display. Along with Harley-Davidson® came Polaris, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Ural and Royal Enfield. Yes…the brands are the best the world has to offer, and they’re all under one roof.
When Dick and Joanne opened their door and their hearts to their customers in 1968 they were determined to operate under a very simple but powerful precept…to sell only the best products at a fair price, and provide those who purchased them with the best service possible. That simple ethos serves and protects both the dealership and its customers. Dick and Joanne’s youthful spirit lives on, and the next generation of Lepley’s is carrying on the tradition because their youngest son Bryan Lepley arrives for business each day driven by the same ideals that created the business.
